At Kiwi, we believe all our children should possess the skills to enable them to communicate effectively for a range of audiences and purposes. 

Writing at Kiwi Primary School

Children are expected to take pride in all of their writing and Kiwi Primary School aims to ensure that children learn to write accurately and legibly in grammatically correct sentences. Children at Kiwi Primary School are taught how to plan, draft, edit and improve their writing. These skills are applied across the whole curriculum. 

Spelling

Children are encouraged to explore words at every opportunity throughout the curriculum. Spellings are taught in explicit sessions, daily in Early years and KS1 and twice a week in KS2. Children in Early Years and KS1 are taught spelling through the Little Wandle phonics programme. In KS2, the teaching of spelling is supported through No-Nonsense Spelling and, where extra support is required, the Little Wandle catch-up programme is used. Handwriting is also taught explicitly, supported by Collins Handwriting. 

Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation

Spelling punctuation and grammar provide the foundations for accurate and meaningful communication. At Kiwi we ensure our children are taught an explicit grammar lesson once a week in addition to the short burst focus included in the Talk for Writing sessions. Children are provided with plentiful opportunities to practise these skills in all curriculum areas.
